The New Essentials

The little black dress, black blazer, and crisp, white button-down shirt—all timeless wardrobe staples. These classics are great because they’re appropriate for any age or occasion. A true investment piece can either be dressed up or down. Having designed closets for fashionistas including Kris Jenner and Giuliana Rancic, I’ve noticed one trend: Classics don’t need to be frumpy. Modernize and (more importantly) individualize your wardrobe staples to reflect your personality and taste. Here are a few of my favorite must-have pieces.

Dark Wash Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans that fit well are not only flattering but also go with just about anything! These pair from J Brand will do well on every woman. They have just enough give to be more comfortable than your mother’s denim but not as stretchy as your tights.

Statement Jewelry
Statement jewelry like this necklace can elevate a simple t-shirt and add the finishing touch to any outfit. The silver finishing contrasted with the jewels makes it the perfect day-to-night accessory. Take Kris Jenner for example. Her bracelet cuff with gold accents and drop earrings are impressive without looking gaudy.

Leather Biker Jacket

Add a sophisticated edge to your outfit with this jacket. Throw this over a shift dress for a lunch date or pair it with your favorite pair of jeans for a concert.

The Easy Button-down Shirt
Don’t know what to wear? Reach for this for a fuss-free, easy look. There’s so much you can do with a freshly pressed white shirt. Dress it up with statement jewelry such as a necklace or bangles or dress it down by rolling up the sleeves and wearing it over your favorite pair of blue jeans.

Oversized Cat-eye Shades

A young and fresh spin on a classic! This is an investment piece, but you know you’ll get a lot of wear out of these quality frames.

Chambray shirt

Whether paired with black skinnies or a sequined mini, a chambray shirt adds youthful flair. (If breezy in the spring, I like to wear this poolside as awarm alternative to a cover-up.)
Printed Scarf
Keep your neck warm and make a colorful statement! A pop of color is like an accessory all on its own.

Nude Patent Pumps
This feminine classic will elongate your legs and never go out of style.

Convertible Clutch
Wear it as a clutch, cross-body, or shoulder bag; this bag is so versatile!
Shift Dress
Pair it with black tights in the winter and strappy platforms in the summer! Looking to stand out? Choose a shift dress you can layer over—perhaps with a vest or a summer scarf.
