Recently, there’s been much hype about the date December 21, 2012. On one end of the spectrum, some people believe it’s the day the world will end; those on the other end say it’ll be just another uneventful Friday. Still, many believe 12/21/12 marks a time of spiritual transformation—a time of enlightenment and for experiencing the world in an entirely new way.

While there’s no way to know for sure what will happen on that fateful December day, I tend to agree with the spiritual aspect of December 2012. And one question many people ask me in terms of this is: “What is spirituality?”
When we talk about spirituality, it’s such a loose term these days and people mistake it for religion or something “new age” or “mystical.” Dictionary.com defines spiritual as: of or pertaining to the spirit or soul, as distinguished from the physical nature; devotional; sacred.
In many religions, people are taught to look outside themselves for enlightenment, and I often do—especially in my awe and connection to the mysteries of nature. But ultimately, I believe that spirituality is about going within… about getting to know yourself and what you came to this planet to do. Ultimately, spirituality deals with your Authentic Soul. It has nothing to do with the body, the intellect, or the mind.
I also think of spirituality as the science and the art of remembrance. It is a remembrance of our original home, where we came from. We’ve been so focused on material things that we forget who we are and where we come from. This is a key component of what I teach in my Soul Blazing workshops—about our Authentic Soul and our Impostors that keep us from getting to know our true selves.
The Big Picture
Have you noticed how quickly time is passing lately?
How many natural catastrophes are happening? How it seems the majority of the world is suffering more than ever with people losing their homes and not being able to put food on their tables? It seems we’re having more conflicts in our relationships and with ourselves. It seems that bullying is at an all-time high. Does the prevalence of these events have anything to do with December 2012? Perhaps.
I like what Shirley McClain had to say about the times we’re now in:
“In 2012 we’re coming into alignment. This is the first time our solar system is in alignment with the center of the galaxy. That carries with it a profound dense, vibrational, and gravitational pull. Thus, the weather. What does that do to our consciousness and our sense of reality?
“The sense of speed, speed, speed and not knowing what to do about it. The karmic laws of cause and effect—what you put out, you get back. At the end of the 26,000 years, which is Dec. 26, 2012, that’s the end of that. We could be on the threshold of a new beginning. This pressure of our psychic/spiritual selves, our internal soul, is telling us to get our act together.”
Yes, our world is changing, and we need to change with it or suffer. That’s precisely why it’s time for everyone to have a spiritual overhaul.
Realize that you can’t stay micro-focused on just our small world. We are all being pushed to care and feel for everyone. Haven’t you noticed how people are generally more curious about the world and other cultures these days?
And while we do need to earn money so we can have a roof over our heads and live a reasonably comfortable lifestyle, we can do that without losing track of who we are inside. Spirituality and meditation brings you back home. It helps you get in touch with you. So the goal for everyone is to find the way back home.
Meditation is a great tool for getting outside your corporeal mind and for raising your internal vibration. As one of my spiritual gurus, Baba G, once told me, “Spirituality really begins where religion ends.”
The Next Beginning
People often identify spirituality with mysticism because the mystic or spiritual journey is an inner journey of the heart. And the reason I found that people have turned to spirituality is that it’s a way to go inward without any names.
So when people ask when they should start a spiritual practice, I share with them this beautiful little phrase from Baba G: “As a bird needs two wings to fly, so a human being needs the two wings of existence—the spiritual and the material to lead a natural and harmonious life.”
If either is neglected for one or the other, such a life becomes unnatural and the results cannot be what we desire them to be. Spirituality provides the weight to restore the balance within ourselves. The highest bliss is located in our Soul.
Spirituality brings lasting and meaningful changes to our lives through inner transformation, and as we change, the universe changes around us. For example, have you ever had a bad day where you got into an intense argument with someone and then when you went back out into the world, you got a speeding ticket or crashed your car or broke something? Everything happens, especially in threes, when you’re spiritually off-balance.
Likewise, have you noticed that when you’re spiritually balanced, life seems to flow easily and effortlessly and people tend to say things like, “You lead a charmed life” or “Life always works out for you.” It’s not that challenges aren’t presented anymore; it’s that when you’re in alignment with your soul, you have the power to handle situations with grace instead of reacting.
When you’re in touch with your spirituality and living life with an open heart, miracles happen because you live each day with more compassion for others and for yourself. This in turn makes you more tolerant, which creates a life that feels and looks blessed. When this occurs, you meet the right people, your creativity is on fire, and romance skyrockets. In other words, tapping into your spirituality is the key to living the life you were meant to live.
But don’t wait until December 2012 to embark on your own spiritual transformation. The time for change is now!
