Southern California is a health and fitness mecca—the best workout crazes premiere here and there are gyms and yoga studios on every corner. Yet despite the wide-ranging options, we can still get bored. That is, unless we’re diving into mud pits, trekking through fiery obstacles and tripping out on all the pretty lights.
The latest races and extreme challenges are infused with creative themes that deem boredom impossible and offer options for all fitness levels—and if you’re a true athlete, there are plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself.
Chase the rainbow at the Color Mob 5k at Irvine Lake on December 8. Run, skip or walk through paint clouds of vibrant color and emerge a human work of abstract art. Inspired by Holi, a joyful Hindu festival of colors where revelers get wild in the streets and social barriers are cast aside, this mob will be colored by a safe, non-toxic mixture of corn starch and food coloring.
The Color Mob is produced by the people behind the Tomato Battles, so you know it’s going to be crazy fun. Best of all, once you grace the finish line, you can show off your colors and listen to bands at the post-race beer garden.
The Electric Run in Orange County takes you through a 5K electric wonderland, created by the designers of the Electric Daisy Carnival and Coachella, using one million watts of light. Think red rock cliffs glowing in psychedelic patterns, tunnels of laser light, glowing arches, neon cactuses and multi-hued fountains thumping to the beat of music. The event benefits Movember and takes place at 7 pm on Friday, November 30 at the OC Fair and Event Center.
The Spartan Sprint in Malibu is a hardcore immersion into a world of muddy hurdles and insane challenges that will show you what you’re really made of. Laced with more than 15 obstacles that test you both mentally and physically, the Spartan Sprint takes place December 1-2 at Calamigos Ranch.
