Tucked behind iconic Fred Segal on Melrose you’ll find a quaint and comfortable upscale restaurant. Mauro’s Café has been situated amongst the various shops that make up Fred Segal for twenty two years (that’s a big deal in LA years) and despite assumptions is not owned or affiliated with the Segal empire. Instead they have simply worked side by side in harmony providing hungry shoppers a delicious bite and a well-deserved Bellini.
Don’t be alarmed that the patio faces the parking lot and not the streets of Melrose. It’s in fact better people watching! Between the expensive cars and celebrity sightings the calm backside of the building offers a cute and colorful place to dine. Entertainment executives, fashion designers, tourists and even dogs are present on any given Sunday brunching. Patio dining is always ideal but on a cold day wander inside to the fine dining area or even better the bustling back bakery where you can find espresso to go and delicious home baked goods (like their Brioche $2.50). Rotating local photography and artwork line the interior walls and crisp white linens grace the authentic Italian restaurant tables.
The coffee is brewed strong, just the way it should be, and brunch cocktails are served in tall glass flutes. Most entrees are listed for $12 including the Poached Eggs & Smoked Salmon (over toasted bread with paper thin cucumbers and chips) opt for the seasonal fruit – you won’t find bland melon here- and make sure to end with decadent Macarons $2. All food is carefully constructed with generous portions and delivered by friendly staff.
Beyond brunch Mauro Café now features Thursday night dinners with live music 6:00- 9:30.
