Valentine’s day—a day of romance or an exploitative marketing scam created by florists, candy makers and jewelers? Technically, it commemorates the death of St. Valentine, which occurred around 270 AD, so you may have to give up the blame-the-florist game and up the ante on the plan to indulge your loved ones. With so many options at our fingertips, why not substitute that cliché dinner at a swanky restaurant with something off the beaten path to show your love?

Playing tourist in your own town can be a blast—except when it includes star tours, paparazzi-packed sidewalks and other fodder for the star struck. There’ll be none of that on the oh-so-decadent Chocolate Indulgence Tour by Tourific Escapes. This three-hour foray into confectionery bliss gets you four to six tastings from LA’s best chocolatiers. Since the cocoa in chocolates contain chemicals that boost serotonin levels, you’re guaranteed a happy buzz and an amorous loved one.

Sex and City Zoo 3 at the Los Angeles Zoo is the perfect way to show a date your wild side while supporting the Zoo’s mission of wildlife preservation and conservation. This lighthearted affair includes wine, champagne and chocolate, animal walkabouts and a thought-provoking presentation about animal dating, mating and cohabitating. Follow it up with an optional five-course dinner at Reggie’s Bistro inside the Zoo. The event takes place Sunday, February 12 at 5 pm.

The Venice Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt is a biking escapade through Venice Beach designed for teams of two to get to know a different side of their partner. You’ll spend the day exploring Venice while uncovering its dirty secrets and some fun surprises. The top three teams win prizes, so if the date doesn’t go so well, you can still come out on top. Bikes are available for rent or you can bring your own. February 11 and12 at 11am, 12pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm and February 14 at 3pm. The hunt starts at 1800 Ocean Front Walk.
