J.Nichols Kitchen is a cozy neighborhood coffee shop style restaurant In Marina Del Rey that was opened by Basil Nichols in 1974. The Nichols are long standing Santa Monica family. I went to school with Basil’s daughter Christine and have been eating at this restaurant since I was 11 yrs. old. The idea behind J. Nichols is to provide good home style food with reasonable prices. They take pride in the quality of service and it shows. The hosts and servers are cheerful and welcoming.
The food is all made from scratch. They have kept many of the original favorites on the menu through the years but do adapt to new ideas and have a nice selection to choose from on the menu.
Delicious Black Pepper Wings with ginger soy glaze.

Marina Del Rey is a small coastal city that is know for boat docks and yacht clubs It is adjacent to Venice and Santa Monica. In this area there tends to to be quite a few touristy places to eat. J.Nichols is great because it is not on a main beach thoroughfare so, it tends to be calmer and more relaxed.
I often come here for breakfast. The waffles and pancakes are really good. Of course they have bacon and sausage but they also accommodate with sides of chicken breast if that is your thing. Last week I ordered a side of chicken breast at another trendy beach restaurant and it came at a hefty price of $8.95. J.Nichols knows better then that and charges $4.00. That’s a great deal.
The oatmeal is really good here. It comes with raisins, brown sugar and milk. Lately they have been adding candied pecans. I know it sounds like a dessert but my friend Dennis claims to have lost 20 lbs. in resent days and this has been breakfast for him.
J. Nichols has just re-opened after renovating the restaurant and although it is a bit more modern, lighter and airier, it still remains warm and comfortable.
An added note; there is a full bar and home made desserts too, in case I didn’t get you with the oatmeal!
