I’ve been eager to share this project here for a long time. Now that it finally published in LUXE last month, I can!
This beach house project was really special to me for a number of reasons. First, the transformation is remarkable. The photos really speak for themselves, honestly. While the home always had breathtaking beach views, the original design lacked soul. Chelsea Sachs and I were able to showcase the best feature of the home while elevating the rest of the details throughout.
Secondly, this was the first time in my 15 year interior design career that I collaborated with another designer on a project. Chelsea and I teamed up on this incredible beach house renovation for her father, NBA legend Phil Jackson, who has owned the property for 20 years. Because she lives in Northern California, she needed a local designer to handle site visits and manage the day to day of the project in-person.
So, her contractor introduced us, and I immediately knew it was a great fit. Not only do we have similar worldviews and interior design philosophies, but our design strengths complemented one another beautifully.
While the project ended up exactly as we hoped, the construction phase of this project was a bit shaky at times. There were issues with subcontractors. The sheetrock installation and finishing took 10 times longer than it should. Worst of all, a building issue with the staircase left Chelsea and me to foot the bill to have it redone properly.
Still, the end result was worth the headaches. And there are lessons I learned along the way that I’ll never forget. Mistakes I’ll never make again. Questions I will now always ask a contractor to make sure we’re on the same page.
I’m so proud of this project. And I’ve taken so much more from it than a beautiful portfolio of “after” photos.
