Heat got you down?  Economic doldrums?  No time for a luxurious vacation?  Well join the club my friends!  But don’t despair, there are plenty of ways to stay put and enjoy yourself.  Remember you may not have to look further than your own backyard this summer.  Here are some great ideas for outdoor entertaining and relaxing…

A family fire pit.  Perfect for roasting s’mores with the kids or cracking open a bottle of wine.  Note the clever log storage.

Who doesn’t enjoy eating outdoors?  Setting up a table and chairs near a garden adds a romantic twist.

Want to go low maintenance?  Fill up a courtyard with pebbles instead of grass.  Stones suggest a Japanese garden feel, the ultimate in relaxation.   This Los Angeles courtyard also has amphitheater style seating which is perfect for entertaining.

Happen to have access to a dock?  Setting up chairs and an umbrella creates a cozy way to spend your afternoon.  No dock?  A backyard is perfect too!

Turn a garden shed into your own private studio, create a colorful cabana and daybed or just add a gorgeous table cloth to your outdoor table.  The possibilities are endless…

No backyard?  Maybe you can create a rooftop retreat (or borrow a friends).
The covered outdoor space creates an intimate environment for dining or relaxing.

Last but certainly not least you can’t go wrong with a good old hammock.

Design Tip:
Don’t feel down just because you can’t travel.  With a little creativity any outdoor space can become your own private oasis. So stay put and enjoy your summer!
