Addicted to Summer

Let’s face it—summer is coming to an end. Luckily, we have rad weather all year long, but as September draws close, the fantasy of an endless summer dissipates along with the humidity. Since we do have one weekend left in August to prolong the laidback mentality, here are a few ways to make the most of it.
See a movie with dead people. Experience Hitchcock in the most perfect homage—a Cinespia screening of The Birds at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this Saturday, August 25 at 8:30 pm. See Tippi Hedren in her prime as a rich and wild socialite whose campaign to win Rod Taylor’s heart is thwarted by an apocalyptic flock of birds that swoop into town and attack humans. Watching thousands of evil birds descend upon schoolchildren on a behemoth screen in the middle of a cemetery is bound to unleash everyone’s inner scream queens and kings. DJ Carlos Nino spins before and after the film.
If you’re in the mood for an epic Sunday Funday, head down to Hermosa Beach for bottomless mimosas, eye candy and one of the best musical lineups of the summer. This Sunday, August 26 from 3 to 8 pm is a fundraiser to help an awesome former local beat cancer—the event features live music from one of Southern California’s favorite bands, Sand Section, whose sound is a distinct fusion of punk rock, blues and reggae, as well as the energetic country stars, The Cordovas.

If you’re a lover of dance music, have no fear—two of LA’s most famous DJs will spin at the event, DJ Quasar, who blends house, electro and hip-hop like no other, and Power 106 FM’s DJ Ingwell, who fuses old-school mixing and scratching with vinyl to the beat and rhythm of his laptop. P.S. Don’t miss out on Boogaloo’s amazing Cajun-style food.

Foodies and wine connoisseurs will be in heaven this weekend at The Los Angeles Epicurean Festival, which couples culinary specialties with stellar wines and spirits. Taste, pair and compare—and then take home your favorites among 500 boutique wines, cheeses and the gamut of delicious fare. There’s also live entertainment, mixology, demos from top LA chefs and some oenologists on hand to teach you the art of recognizing great wines.

If you’re feeling a little more exotic, explore Chinatown Summer Nights, which lets you sample authentic Chinese cuisine alongside LA’s most popular gourmet food trucks. Check out large-scale video projections while you shake it on the outdoor dance floor to the sounds of KCRW DJs Jason Bentley, Jeremy Sole, Anthony Valadez and Valida. Saturday, August 25 from 5 pm to midnight.
