Egypt: Just Go

Egypt. Not exactly everyone's first destination of choice right now but I am hoping to change that. Now is the time to go because you will never experience Egypt this way again. There are no tourists, save some Russians, and the museums and sights are virtually yours for the taking. Instead of three hour lines to enter the National Museum, you breeze right in. The country is on the verge of democracy for the first time and the hopefulness is contagious. Egyptians love Americans and we met the most friendly, wonderful people the entire trip. So I say GO NOW. Or as a friend said to me once about the Barney's Warehouse Sale: run don't walk.

Also for the best tour call DAI travel. They will set you up and give you the experience of a lifetime. They sure gave that to me!  800.659.4599

Cairo- stay at the Fairmont. It's not very charming but it's luxurious and the rooftop pool with Nile views are rock star.

In Cairo dine at Abou El Sid. It's everything the Fairmont is not and it's delicious.

Of course you must visit the Pyramids and the National Museum. Get an egyptologist as a tour guide. The knowledge is overwhelming and you will want an expert.

Sail down the Nile and be transported back in time to Agatha Christie's Egypt. Oberoi cruises are best.

Be sure to visit Aswan and Luxor, most cruises stop there. From Aswan you can visit the Philae Temple - my personal favorite.

For a special addition I recommend Alexandria as a side trip. It is where all the Cairenes go to vacation and swim in the Mediterranean. And the new Library is a stunning addition and homage to Alex's past.

If you can't get to Egypt this year you can always transport yourself back in time to Ancient Egypt. A fast but informative read that separates myth from reality. Cleaopatra by Tyldesley.
