Hydration is key for reducing the effects of aging and keeping skin from getting flaky and chapped. Drink water like it’s the heat of summer, eat a diet rich in Omega 3s and avoid using really hot water on your face and body.
Alcohol-based, oil-reducing cleansers are too harsh this time of year. Choose gentle, fragrance-free face washes and stay away from acne medicine as much as you can. A dermatologist favorite is Cetaphil, and there are many organic and sulfate-free options you can seek out as well. A great choice is Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser.
Even if the sun isn’t out, moisturizer is essential during winter. Slather it on! Using an oil-based moisturizer can help form a better layer of protection during drier months. A great tip offered by Molly Walsh, esthetician to the stars, is to use a few drops of essential oil under your daily moisturizer so that you're hydrated without feeling greasy. Molly recommends Decleor essential oils to nourish the skin during winter.
Wear sunscreen every single day—no matter where you are or what you’re doing. If you go skiing or snowboarding somewhere, remember that the chance of UV exposure and photo damage is even higher in the snow than on the beach.
Since we are apt to wash our hands more during flu and cold season, the skin on our hands is drier than ever. Slather on both moisturizer and sunscreen several times a day. CeraVe moisturizing cream is an excellent choice as it increases the skin’s ability to attract and hold moisture, while forming a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss.
This is also a great time to do overnight treatments, such as Oraser Overnight Hand Recovery which is packed with antioxidants and Coenzyme Q10.
